FAQs

Feel free to write if you have any other questions!

I'm confused.  What happened to Hotel Ali Shungu in the city of Otavalo?

The Otavalo we moved to was a quiet little pueblo 22 years ago. It has grown into a bustling, busy city, not what we came here for.  We have sold the property and we are now dedicating our energies to making your stay unique at the Mountaintop Lodge.

Do we have to share a guesthouse with other guests?

No, whether you are 1 guest or a family of five, the price is for a guesthouse.

How can we pay?

We accept cash! We no longer accept travelers checks.  We accept credit cards, but only through Paypal.  You may pay with your credit card over the internet using Paypal.

How far are we from Otavalo?

We are about 3 miles from Otavalo.  The beautiful 45 minute walk to Otavalo follows a quiet cobblestone road and is easy…….it is all downhill.

How can we get to and from Otavalo?

The Ali Shungu Montero often drives down to Otavalo each morning between 8:00-9:00 am.  Guests are welcomed to drive down with us at these times!  Local buses pass by three times a day to and from Yambiro, not very convenient.  Otherwise, a taxi costs only $5.00 each way and we can easily have a taxi here at the Lodge within 10-15 minutes.

Is there any danger of robberies?

This area located on the outskirts of Otavalo is very safe!  The people of these small rural communities live a simple life and are very friendly.  Of course, on Saturday in the Otavalo market, one must be aware of the pickpockets!  In years past, travelers have reported robberies at the Lagunas.  Police report that these are usually setups, a guide or a driver involved.
