We fell in love with Ecuador and the Otavalo people and their culture back in the 70’s when we were starting a small South American export business. It was about 30 years ago that we decided to close up our lives in the US and move here to Otavalo to build a small hotel.
As the town grew into a city we began our search for a piece of land outside of Otavalo where we could be closer to the indigenous culture and away from the turmoil of city development.
And it was meant to be! We found 40 acres on a mountaintop in a small Indigenous community just a few miles from Otavalo and we began to build again in 2002; the result being the Ali Shungu Mountaintop Lodge.

It is a magic mountaintop! It certainly put a spell on us! Before we converted to Vacation Home Rentals travelers rated our B & B consistently the best of Otavalo on popular review sites and in guide books for over ten years. Our private 40 acre mountaintop is remote, off the beaten track, yet only 3 miles to the famous markets of Otavalo and close to the local villages, lagunas and volcanos.

Your Vacation Home Guesthouse is filled with Ecuadorian crafts, our collection of the last four decades, surrounding one with color and beauty. The free Wi-Fi connection is excellent! Huge picture windows offer spectacular mountaintop views. An efficient wood stove will keep you warm during the chilly Andean evenings. It’s not a room, it’s a house. The Community of Yambiro is an Indigenous farming village located less than 3 miles from the city of Otavalo. It is a safe, peaceful environment of cobblestone roads, mountain views, and gentle people. The principle activity of the villagers is the cultivation of Maize and grains, though globalization is inevitably altering this rural culture.
